Contest Preparation That Goes Past the Notes

UIL Solo & Ensemble asks a student to stand in front of a judge, alone, and perform. That is a different skill from playing well in the back of a section — and it is the skill our instruction is built around. Strings Keys and Guitar is a performance-based studio, so contest preparation is not a special add-on here. It is what we already do, pointed at a specific date.

Preparation is private and one-on-one. We work through the contest selection phrase by phrase: intonation, rhythm, bowing or fingering choices, dynamics, and the musical decisions a judge is actually listening for. We also rehearse the parts students rarely practice — walking in, tuning under pressure, starting cleanly, and recovering when something goes sideways mid-piece.

Who This Is For

Orchestra and band students in Flower Mound, Lewisville, Bartonville, Lantana, Argyle, Highland Village, Coppell and Denton who are preparing a solo or small-ensemble entry. Students come to us at every level: some are chasing a Division I rating, some simply want to walk in without their hands shaking. Both are worth preparing for, and both get the same structured approach.

You do not need to be an existing weekly student. Many families come specifically for contest season and stay afterward, but there is no obligation either way, and there is never an enrollment fee.

Instruments We Coach

Violin, viola, cello and double bass for orchestra students; piano for solo entries; and guitar. Music theory support is available alongside contest work for students who want to understand the piece rather than only execute it — which tends to be exactly what separates a good performance from a memorized one.

Judged Performance Builds More Than a Rating

One of our double bass families put it plainly after their daughter tried out for Region Orchestra: “Caleb is an awesome Double Bass teacher. He motivated my sixteen year-old to try out for Region Orchestra, telling her she just needed a little confidence.” She made third chair. The rating matters, but the confidence a student carries out of a judged room is what shows up in every rehearsal afterward.

Lessons are available in person at our Cross Timbers Road studio in Flower Mound, or online over Zoom when schedules or weather get complicated. Scheduling is flexible — contest season is busy, and we would rather work around a rehearsal calendar than compete with it.
